Choose your RV Camp Wisely

Traveling in an RV combines the lure of the open road with the creature comforts that so many of us have become so accustomed to. One of the greatest things about RV travel is that there are RV parks all over the U.S. that are available for your stay. However, before you head out on your explorations, there are a few things you should know about campgrounds that accommodate RVs—they are not all created equal!
Choose your RV camp wisely

RV campgrounds are abundant across this country of ours. They can be found in state and national parks, in or near major tourist attractions and on private property. Some of them cater to a tight budget, keeping costs as low as possible, while others are a little more generous with the amenities and comfort factors. The more rustic campgrounds don’t offer much more than a parking spot, while others offer water, sewer, electrical hookups and cable TV. Some of the “higher end” campgrounds provide a more resort-like feel by offering pools, restaurants, free Wi-Fi and business centers.

Here are a few examples of great RV parks where you may just want to stay for a while:

Boyd’s Key West Campground – Located on the furthest of the Florida Keys, this RV park offers oceanfront campsites that are just a few miles from the action of downtown Key West and Duvall Street, which are easily accessible by taxi or city bus. You can also enjoy the pool and the beach area. Additional amenities include bathrooms, a marina and free wireless Internet. There are 250 sites in the camp, so hopefully you buy into the adage of “the more, the merrier!”

Durango RV Resort – This park is located in Red Bluff, California. It’s a high-end destination that supports 174 camping sites on the Sacramento River. Each site offers Powerhouse Pedestals, which provide electricity, cable television and high-speed Wi-Fi. This park allows you to relax by the pool, enjoy the clubhouses or sit around the outdoor fireplaces. Your pet will think he’s in doggy heaven with the 45-acre dog park and the self-serve automatic dog washing station.

Yosemite Pines RV Park – You can camp inside Yosemite National Park, but the campgrounds are slightly primitive, with no hookups available. For a campsite with more amenities, your best bet is to set up camp outside the actual park. Yosemite Pines RV park is only 22 miles down the road, and provides great pull-through and back-in sites. This RV park is family friendly, as is evidenced by the gold mine where kids can pan for gold. There’s also a petting zoo, complete with alpacas.

Zion River Resort – This RV resort is located just 13 miles from the south entrance to Zion National Park. It’s a great camping spot for those who tend to put down more roots in the wintertime. It has full hookups, cement parking pads, free Wi-Fi and barbeque grills. Explore the red sandstone cliffs in Utah’s first national park, then come back and relax in your rental RV. This is also a good park to use as a base while you make shorter daytrips to explore places like nearby Bryce Canyon Park, as well as the north rim of the Grand Canyon.

Shady Dell RV Park – In southern Arizona’s old-west town of Bisbee, you will find this RV park with a “twist;” you don’t even need to bring a motorhome! There are RVs at this park that you can rent. They present themselves as nine beautifully restored antique travel trailers. These trailers include a vintage 1949 Airstream, a 1947 Tiki bus, alongside an outrigger tiki bar. There is also the fancy 1951 Royal Mansion, which comes complete with a full-sized bed, a breakfast nook, and a private bathroom, all adorned with leopard skin patterned carpet. However, the fact that you will be in your Cruise America rental RV makes renting one of these trailers unnecessary, but just know that they’re there should you misplace the RV you’re in! If you’re not up to cooking, you can always visit Dot’s Diner for a homemade breakfast or lunch.

Horse Thief Campground – This family owned RV Park in Hill City, South Dakota is more on the rustic side. It has a simple charm, as well as a fabulous location that is near many of the natural wonders of the state. The park is near Custer State Park, which really is “where the buffalo roam.” In addition, it’s close to the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, where you can see herds of wild mustang galloping through. Mt. Rushmore is nearby, while Crazy Horse Mountain and the Mammoth site are just a short drive away. The campground itself is a quiet getaway from rest of the world, and each site offers a fire ring, as well as use of the small store and a small heated pool.

Keep in mind that one of the beautiful things about renting a motorhome from Cruise America is that if you ever find yourself without an RV park, you can always camp boondock style, as your rental RV is completely self sufficient.
