Kid-Friendly Wilmington RV Adventure

Few are the feelings that are comparable to leaving town and heading out on the open road for your next RV adventure. RV adventures are like snowflakes … no two are the same! You could drive the U.S. for the rest of your life and never cover even a small part of the wonderful trips that are available in this country of ours. One such adventure may be in the port city of Wilmington, North Carolina. In fact, there is a great KOA there where you can park your rental RV from Cruise America and just kick back and enjoy the area.

Kid-Friendly Wilmington RV Adventure

If you’re lucky, you may get a spot right near the pool (although you can’t get TOO far away from it). It’s always nice to get in a relaxing swim once camp is all set up. This especially holds true on a hot and humid day. The kids will make new friends and spend all day in there if you let them.

In the Wilmington KOA there are so many amenities to keep the kiddos busy. There is the jump pad, complete with a playground that houses a pirate ship! There is also the gem mine experience, along with the Saturday kid-friendly movie night with free snacks and beverages. What kid wouldn’t love that?

If the day is hot, and you want the perfect form of cooling relief, pack up your beach bags and head to Carolina Beach State Park. Perhaps you’ve read about this beach and park, along with the carnivorous plants. The best way to view some of the incredible plants would be to take a hike along the well-known Flytrap Trail. It may not be a bad idea to put a little bug repellent on before hitting the trail, as the little creepy crawlies can be numerous during the summer.

You may visit the pocosin wetlands area, where it’s very common to see growing Venus Flytraps. Oh, and if you happen to have a pet fly, you’d better keep him clear of this particular area! The campground loop is beautiful to drive. You can visit the 54-slip marina which is located at the junctions of Snow’s Cut and the Cape Fear River. There you will find two public boat launches, paddle boarding and fishing.

Another great place to visit is Kure Beach. This is a beach that’s buzzing with activity. It’s lined with colorful homes and a beautiful pier that boasts being the oldest pier on the entire east coast. You can stroll out on the warm sand, or take your time visiting the plethora of shops and eateries.

Another great activity for the whole family is to catch the ferry to the quaint little town of Southport. While there, you can visit the North Carolina maritime Museum, the Old Brunswick County Jail, the Oak Island Lighthouse and Waterfront Park, where you can sit in one of many porch swings or benches that are lined up for viewers to witness the beauty of the Cape Fear River Vistas. There is also great dining, great fishing and great people watching! Enjoy the many antique shops or, if you’re there for Easter weekend, you can enjoy the giant arts and crafts show, where people come from all around to show off, and sell, their goods.

Also, once back across the pond, don’t miss the North Carolina Aquarium, the Fort Fisher State Historic Site and State Recreation Area. Other notable sites to see are the Airlie Gardens, the Tregembo Animal Park, Battleship, North Carolina and downtown Wilmington River Walk.

Lastly, here’s a little tip for you—if you happen to find yourself on the boardwalk of Carolina Beach, you’ll find Britts Donut Shop. They sell what have been described as America’s best donuts. You can stand at the counter and watch them being made. When you get them in hand, they are hot, fresh and delicious. How often do donuts create memories? Of course, it doesn’t matter where you go or what you do in your Cruise America rental RV, you are going to create lasting memories for the entire family, and have a blast while you’re doing it!
